Ecdysterone has been available as a dietary supplement for a long time, but only now can studies clearly show the effects of the substance.

The increases are due to ecdysterone's binding to estrogen receptors (ER), which in turn leads to increased levels of the hormone IGF1.

Ecdysterone is one of several substances being investigated by WADA and may in the future be placed on WADA's doping list. In 2021, it is not on the list and is free for competing athletes to use.
